Hey guys 👋 welcome back to another SkinLovin’ Sundays post as part of my weekly blog series! For those of you who are new to The Typical Beauty Blog or those of you who don’t follow me… yet 😜 its basically a series which I started to focus exclusively on skincare. So if thats something which you fancy then make sure to check every Sunday 🗓. In these weekly posts I’m gonna try to focus less on products & more on techniques & tips for you guys… so let’s get started 👉 Today’s topic is: “The effects of over-exfoliating”
Now 💁 let me just say I love using scrubs, masks & exfoliators as much as the next person, but how much is too much? Its so important to know where to draw the line 🙅 in terms of the concentration of exfoliants or the amount of times you use a face scrub, especially the ones with micro-beads. You should always start by using each product how its recommended on the label, therefore if a product says to use it once a week 🗓 or more if necessary then use it once a week for a couple of weeks before using it twice. That way your skins pH level has time to adjust & rebalance itself after each use.
But how do you know whether you’ve done too much? Well 👇:
- Skin feels more sensitive than usual 😵
- Skin looks red
- The skin feels rubbery, I don’t really know how to describe this but it basically doesn’t feel like your normal skin… think of a wax figure
- It feels dry-er or oily-er than usual
- Skin starts peeling – this is where you really just gotta STOP I’ve had some degree of flaking/peeling skin in the past & guys… it takes forever to go away! So don’t let yourself get to that stage!
What I’m trying to say is that your skin is really delicate 👶, it doesn’t matter whether you’ve got dry, combination or oily skin (are you unsure about your skin type? Read my post here 👉 SkinLovin’ Sundays #7 & find out) the skin needs to remain its balance and over exfoliation affects this balance because you essentially break the barrier that protects your skin. As I’ve probably said multiple times throughout this series everyones skin is unique & therefore what works really well for one person might not work as well, or if at all for the next person! So its just about finding the perfect balance that works for you individually.
Remember to never be too aggressive with your skin & if you’re new to the skincare world make sure to read the labels of each thing that you’re using as they usually state whether you should use this once a week or however many times. I personally use a face scrub 3/4 times a week & try to do a mask 2/3 times a week & other than that I use my favourite charcoal cleanser, which I will be reviewing soon ⏳
I know that my routine might be too much exfoliating for some skin types but atm this is working for my skin, I have combination skin/bordering on oily 💧 skin but I get the odd dry patches around my mouth/chin 👄 area & using a scrub up to 4 times a week just really helps my skin be smooth all over. However, my routine isn’t set in stone because if I feel like I’m stripping my skin off their natural oils too much I cut back on the amount of time I scrub/facemask that week by half & just stick to my trusty charcoal cleanser. I also make sure to moisturise my face A LOT in the evenings, cause when I wake up I feel like I’ve been getting a facial massage all night… LUSH 🙌
